Carole King to release reissues of four classic albums

Advertisements

Carole-King-to-release-reissues-of-four-classic-albums Email this story Printable version

Carole King will release reissues of four classic albums - Pearls: Songs of Goffin and King (1980), Touch the Sky (1979), Welcome Home (1978), and Simple Things (1977) - on February 28 via her own Rockingale Records label and Concord Music Group. Each includes the original photography and album notes and, aside from Pearls, has never been previously released on CD in the United States.

Carole King is one of the primary architects of the singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s, thanks in large part to the hugely influential body of work she had already established by the time she released her first solo album. King wrote hit songs for other artists for nearly a decade before stepping into the spotlight with her landmark 1971 release Tapestry, which received a Diamond Award from the RIAA for sales of more than 10 million units in the U.S., with more than 25 million units sold worldwide.

These subsequent releases brim with the unprecedented honesty and intimacy of the singer-songwriter era and helped solidify her status as one of the most successful and revered female songwriter in pop music history.

Pearls: Songs of Goffin and King (1980)
Next to Tapestry, which was released nearly a decade earlier, Pearls is considered one of King's finest recordings. Just as the title suggests, it's a retrospective of classic songs written by the powerhouse creative team of King and former husband Gerry Goffin. Included among the ten tracks are many of the songs that put other artists on the map before King launched her solo career: 'The Loco-Motion' (Little Eva, Grand Funk Railroad), 'One Fine Day' (The Chiffons, Rita Coolidge), 'Chains' (The Beatles), 'Hey Girl' (Bobby Vee, The Righteous Brothers, Donnie Osmond, George Benson), and more.

Simple Things (1977)
Simple Things marked King's transition from Epic Records to the Capitol label, and also introduced songwriter/husband Rick Evers as her collaborative partner (the marital and creative partnership was short lived, as Evers died within a year after the release of the ten-song set). The King-Evers songwriting is fleshed out by King's six-piece band, Navarro: guitarists Rob McEntee and Mark Hallman, bassist Rob Galloway, drummer Michael Wooten, percussionist Miguel Rivera, and flutist/saxophonist/clarinetist Richard Hardy.

Welcome Home (1978)
Welcome Home is an eclectic and exploratory outing, with songs ranging from the Beatle-esque ('Venusian Diamond') to the dance beat ('Disco Tech'). But the album is also marked by tragedy. It's King's second recording to showcase the collaborative songwriting partnership with her husband Rick Evers, who died in the months between the completion of the recording sessions in January 1978 and the release in May (Evers appears prominently in the album photos). Welcome Home - with backing by her band Navarro - provides a snapshot of an artist willing to take risks by stepping beyond preconceptions to embrace a range of styles.

Touch the Sky (1979)
Touch the Sky was recorded in Austin, Texas, with a team of musicians that included some members of Navarro - Hallman, Hardy, and Rivera - along with musicians from Jerry Jeff Walker's band. King plays acoustic guitar on 'Walk With Me' and 'Passing of the Days,' and acoustic piano on 'Time Gone By,' 'Crazy,' and 'You Still Want Her.' The result of this diverse collection of musicianship is a unique blend of folk and country, all of which is held together by King's deft songcraft.

Viral video masters (and power-pop band) OK Go have just launched another nutty, creative video.

More well-known for their ludicrously involved videos than their music, the Chicagoans behind the treadmill classic, the Rube Goldberg contraption, the choreographed dog dance and more have done it again.

They're fresh off providing the theme song for the new Muppets movie and have got funding from auto manufacturer Chrysler to create another fun DIY-type project

Here, the band perform their new single 'Needing/Getting' by driving a car through a musical obstacle course.

Check out the mayhem below. Oh, and buy a Chevy Sonic. The song's pretty good too.

Mock-rockers Tenacious D ' Jack Black and Kyle Gass ' release a teaser animation for their new album.

The acoustic joke-metal duo toured Australia with Foo Fighters late last year and now they prepare for their third album Rize Of The Fenix.

In a bitter teaser for the new album, Black claims that critics wrote them off following their last album/film The Pick Of Destiny but they are ready to 'rize' again.

You can hear the song's intro below on SoundCloud but it works a lot better alongside the little animation at their Rize Of The Fenix page here.

Rumour has it that the album will be released in May.

Dr Conrad Murray requests jail release

Dr-Conrad-Murray-requests-jail-release Email this story Printable version

Dr Conrad Murray has asked to be released from jail.

The 58-year-old physician was sentenced to four years behind bars for the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson, who died two years ago from acute Propofol intoxication.

Murray appealed his conviction last month and is now requesting that a judge release him from jail on no bail.

TMZ reports that Murray believes he had an unfair trial.

'[During the trial there was] improper exclusion of defense evidence and witnesses that resulted in violating the defendant's State and constitutional rights to due process, to present a defense and to the effective assistance of counsel,' the legal documents read.

Murray is reportedly living in solitary confinement under maximum security conditions.

If granted release from jail as requested in his appeal, Murray would wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

He is planning on living with Nicole Alvarez, the mother of his children.

Murray stated he would take up employment to support his family.

His medical license has been revoked and it is unknown what job he plans on pursuing.

The former heart surgeon will represent himself through the appeal process.

Gilbert OSullivan to release best of

Advertisements

added: 29 Jan 2012 // by: newsdesk

Gilbert-OSullivan-to-release-best-of Email this story Printable version

Gilbert O'Sullivan, one of the country's most revered singers, songwriters and musicians, celebrates an amazing forty-five year recording career with the release of 'A Singer and His Songs - The Very Best Of Gilbert O'Sullivan' on 5th March 2012, through Union Square Music. The album will also be supported by a full UK tour beginning on 17th March through to 15th April.

Part of a major Gilbert O'Sullivan reissue campaign, the album chronicles songs from his debut album, 'Himself' in 1971, through to his most recent album 'Gilbertville' and features no less than 14 top 10 UK hits, including the multi-million US selling and Grammy-nominated, 'Alone Again (Naturally)', the unforgettable UK number 1 'Clair' and 'Get Down, for which he won two Ivor Novello Awards in 1973, for Best Song and Best Songwriter.

Gilbert's first two albums, 'Himself' and 'Back To Front' both stayed in the UK chart for over a year (86 and 64 weeks respectively) and in 1972 Gilbert was the biggest selling UK artist in the world. The incredible success of 'Alone Again (Naturally)' in America catapulted Gilbert into stardom and he made several appearance on US shows hosted by music legends such as Dean Martin and Burt Bacharach.

Gilbert's songs have appeared in TV series including The Simpsons and Life On Mars and in films such as The Virgin Suicides, Stuart Little, Margot At The Wedding and Stuck On You. His songs have been covered by acts as diverse as Elton John, Bobby Darin, The Feeling, Nina Simone, Har Mar Superstar, Sarah Vaughan, Andy Williams, The Pet Shop Boys, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, and Herb Alpert, and at a recent live show in Dublin Morrissey performed a version of 'Nothing Rhymed' .

'Nothing Rhymed' was also name-checked by Richard Curtis, who on accepting a Bafta for Comic Relief, recited the following lyrics as a motivating factor behind his setting up of the charity: 'When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy, eating more than enough apple pies, will I glance at my screen and see real human beings starve to death right in front of my eyes?' Then he added in his own words 'Eat your heart out, Bob Dylan!'

More recently 'Gilbertville', which was released in January 2011, was hailed as one of his finest albums to date, which led critics and the media to suggest maybe it was time to revisit O'Sullivan's career for re-appraisal.

`Smart kitchen-sink lyrics, super melodic songs, his new stuff just as good as his old; if he'd never had a hit, or worn an oversize flat cap, he'd be hailed as our own Randy Newman ' one who references tea (frequently) and frozen peas (occasionally). At his best, he is the missing link between the Kinks and Squeeze' - The Guardian

Along with the release of the album, fans will be delighted to know that Gilbert will be touring with 'A Singer and His Songs', performing 18 live dates across the UK from 17th March 2012.

He will be joined by his amazing 11 piece band, including a string quartet, to present a stunning two hour plus performance.

The Brute Chorus set to release new single 'My Testament'

The-Brute-Chorus-set-to-release-new-single-My-Testament Email this story Printable version

Fans of The Brute Chorus will be delighted to learn that the band are planning to release their new single My Testament on March 12th.

Regulars to the Brute's exciting live shows will know it as the song that has adorned the end of their sets since last summer, a rapturous last hurrah that brings their show to a triumphant climax.

The single is based on a forgotten blues stomper by an equally forgotten Big Brown & The Gamblers that the boys came across while digging among the racks at Camden's Sounds That Swing, a mecca for record collectors and rockabilly fanatics. Now augmented with original verses by the band the song finds singer James Steel declaring what should be done with his earthly remains once he's gone, finally concluding

'...and if the grave don't want me I'll just wait alone here 'til doomsday...'

Self produced and possessing all the garage qualities of the band's beloved Dirtbombs or Billy Childish & the Buff Medways this record sees the band dancing their way to oblivion with their most upbeat and jubilant track to date.

My Testament is to be released as a free download to coincide with The Brute Chorus' first visit to America, a short tour beginning in New York and finishing with the band's first appearance at the renowned SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. Come join the Brutes at their pre-SXSW party at Studio Private at The Old Shoreditch Station (1 Kingsland Rd) on the 25th February.

The Brute Chorus have entirely funded this entire American tour themselves, and have dug as deep as they can into their pockets and sofas, deeming a virtual 'passing of the hat' necessary to continue with their plans of an American initiation to The Brute's craft. In exchange for a small contribution at http://www.indiegogo.com/The-Brute-Chorus-British-Invasion-American-Mini-tour-SXSW-Tour The Brute Chorus can exchange gifts for small donations such as autographed records, limited edition Brute SXSW t-shirts ' or even perform their raucous, stomping set live at your party. Metallica-to-release-Beyond-Magnetic-EP-on-CD Email this story Printable version

Metallica are set to release their Beyond Magnetic EP on CD on January 30th 2012. Previously available only on iTunes, it features four previously unreleased songs, which were originally a gift to Metallica's Metallica Club members to enjoy immediately after the band played them at their fan club shows in December 2011. The band said 'We've been feeling all the love and positive vibes beyond our wildest expectations on the mp3 side, so we decided to go "old school" (!!) and also release those four songs on a CD'

They continued, 'During the Death Magnetic album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you've all come to know over the last three years,' said the members of Metallica. 'Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on 'Mission Metallica' (remember 'Mission Metallica'?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, 'What ever happened to those other four songs???.' We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them just for this special celebration, so here are the four leftover tracks from the Death Magnetic sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March '08. These four songs were released as gift to our closest fans, the members of our Fan Club, to enjoy. Now they're being made available to you.'

The Drums to release new single 'Days'

Advertisements

added: 20 Jan 2012 // by: newsdesk

The-Drums-to-release-new-single-Days Email this story Printable version

'Days' is the third single to be taken from The Drums' second album 'Portamento', standing out for its sparse thorny guitar, foreboding harmonies and crest-fallen sentiment and showcasing The Drums' knack for making the melancholy feel so alluring and cathartic.

The Drums' frontman Jonny Pierce explains, 'When I wrote and recorded it I thought it might be just another heartbreak song, but when I listened back to it I saw it was more than that. It was a reaction to years of trying to make things work one way and then having a breakthrough and realizing sometimes you have to start over completely from scratch to be at peace with yourself. '

The single's release date of February 27th 2012 also sees The Drums headline an NME Awards Show at London's Roundhouse as part of a short UK tour. Support will come from Spector.

Prior to these dates, the band will be heading to Australia and Singapore for the Laneway Festival and two shows in Melbourne and Sydney with Cults.

'Portamento' - released just over a year since The Drums' debut - reveals a band tugging lightly at the boundaries of their sound while still retaining their recognizable sonic signatures. Sweet rushes of melody and brittle synthesizer sheens colliding with wiry Spector-esque guitar lines are still very much present, but singer, Jonny Pierce's lyrics have assumed a deeper, personal tone and coupled with the band's own more expansive production, 'Portamento' is a more complex, but ultimately more rewarding listen than their debut.

To accommodate the record's sonic expansiveness, the band has swollen to a quintet live, augmented by two auxiliary members including good friend Myles Matheny on guitar and bass. Also gone are the backing tracks used for the bulk of their live shows previously, thus lending their performances a more visceral, spontaneous feel, in line with the aesthetic of the new album.

Full 2012 UK tour dates:

February 26: Liverpool, O2 Academy ' venue upgrade
February 27: London, Roundhouse (NME Awards Show)
February 28: Oxford, O2 Academy ' venue upgrade The Drums are:
Jonny Pierce - vocals
Jacob Graham - synths
Connor Hanwick ' guitar

The Mars Volta to release new album 'Noctourniquet'

Advertisements

added: 19 Jan 2012 // by: newsdesk

The-Mars-Volta-to-release-new-album-Noctourniquet Email this story Printable version

Known for such landmark releases as the gold-certified De-Loused In The Comatorium and Frances The Mute and 2008's The Bedlam In Goliath which featured Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy winner "Wax Simulacra," The Mars Volta returns in epic and unexpected fashion with its sixth album: Noctourniquet which will be released March 26 by Warner Bros.

While Noctourniquet was, in typical Mars Volta fashion, written by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala and produced by Rodriguez-Lopez, the 13-track album explores musical territories previously uncharted in the duo's 20 or so years of creating music together. The spectrum of musical and emotional textures conceived and created by Rodriguez-Lopez on Noctourniquet ranges from the opening bombast of "The Whip Hand" to the menacing crawl of "The Malkin Jewel" punctuated throughout by hypnotic melodies and borderline electro-ambient washes, most notably in the epic "In Absentia." The bold diversity of the new material combined with Rodriguez-Lopez's assured producer's hand guiding The Mars Volta's most confident and refined performances to date make Noctourniquet an early contender for this year's most challenging and rewarding listen.

As with previous Mars Volta efforts, Bixler-Zavala's lyrics trace a narrative journey with a defined protagonist, this time inspired by disparate elements including '80s UK alt-rockers The Godfathers, Superman comic nemesis Solomon Grundy and the Greek myth of Hyacinthus.

Noctourniquet was performed by The Mars Volta lineup of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Juan Alderete de la Pena, Marcel Rodriguez Lopez, and Deantoni Parks.

A full track listing is posted at the band's website www.themarsvolta.com/

Strength comes from our bones ' the knowledge that, deep down, nothing is impossible.

'Bones', the stunning new single, and album of the same name, from Young Guns, captures exactly that: it's a hymn to bravery and boldness, the defining statement so far from one of our finest bands.

'Bones' picks up perfectly where lead single, 'Learn My Lesson', left off ' with it's instant anthemnic quality and most importantly, serves as further proof that Young Guns could well be on the cusp of something very special.

Stooshe to release new single

Recently longlisted for the BBC Sound of 2012, the futuristic trio Stooshe will release their second single 'Love Me' on March 5th on Warner Bros. Records.

'Love Me' follows their debut single 'Betty Woz Gone' which became YouTube's most viewed music video in the UK when it received 100,000 views on the day of its initial upload.

Produced by Future Cut (Lily Allen, Professor Green, Wretch32), 'Love Me' bursts with Stooshe's playful lyrics, fiercely independent attitude and another irresistible, bold hook. Complementing the trio's tight, characteristic vocals is a guest rap courtesy of Travie McCoy, who enjoyed a huge solo hit with his Bruno Mars collaboration 'Billionaire', four Top 10 hits with his band Gym Class Heroes and another as guest on Taio Cruz's single 'Higher'.

News of Stooshe's inclusion in the BBC Sound of 2012 longlist is just one of a number of indicators of their impending mainstream breakthrough. They've received over a million online views split between their YouTube site and special sessions recorded for iD, SBTV, MTV and Virgin, while positive press coverage has come from a diverse array of publications including The Independent, The Daily Star, RWD, The Mirror and Top of the Pops. Their popularity amongst other artist was demonstrated when their video for 'Betty Woz Gone' won the approval of Ed Sheeran, Rizzle Kicks and Wretch 32.

Boisterous, mischievous, outgoing and witty, Alex Buggs, Courtney Rumbold and Karis Anderson are three brilliantly distinct personalities, as attainable as they are aspirational. Doing away with outdated ideas, when it comes to who they are and the music they make, Stooshe are determinedly deconstructing stereotypes. Packed full of provocative, punchy wordplay, cutting-edge choruses and three incredible vocals, their sound is as bold as it is edgy. Filling a huge gap in the girl band market, Stooshe deliver a '90s sensibility with a futuristic sound.

Pulled Apart By Horses release V.E.N.O.M

Pulled-Apart-By-Horses-release-V.E.N.O.M Email this story Printable version

Pulled Apart By Horses are excited to announce that they are once again ready to charge from the starting stalls with the release of a brand new single, 'V.E.N.O.M' today through Transgressive Records.

This will be the first opportunity to hear the results of the band's work with legendary producer Gill Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters etc), ahead of the album's release in 2012. The single will be released on digital and 7' formats and will be backed with two exclusive b-sides.'V.E.N.O.M. is a raw, breakneck beast that, once written, took on a life of it's own,' explains drummer Lee Vincent. 'It has all the elements that make our band fun to be in. Fast riffing, huge build ups, trashy lyrics and the all important pay- off.'

The band's self-titled 2010 debut was a sonic maelstrom of screamo and hard disco riffage; here was heavy music that you could shake a tail feather to, pop music at its most corrupted. Dance music played by wiry punk weirdo's. Essentially, the band's much-talked about live show captured on plastic, early singles such as 'Back To The Fuck Yeah' and 'High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive' somehow ended up being played repeatedly by Radio 1, on whose playlists they gleefully sat like the mad tramp that's gate-crashed the toff's tea party. Fuck yeah indeed!

But things move fast. Pulled Apart By Horses have already moved way beyond those early days. The Leeds quartet have put meat on the brittle musical bones of their debut and with their second album have created a monster. It's a much more muscular creature than its kid brother, one that could go toe-to-toe with titans like AC/DC, Nirvana or Queens Of The Stone Age and still come out looking pretty after twelve rounds. 'Our debut was powerful, but it was done in no time at all,' says Lee Vincent. 'Really it was an attempt to capture the energy and chaos of our live show. The new recordings sound fuller, bigger, more focused, the playing is better, we're moving forward all the time. It's got more balls too. Bigger balls. It's direct and to the point. We've left nothing to chance.'

The band's new album 'Tough Love' is released next week and to mark the release day, the band will bring their awesome live show to Rough Trade East for an instore at 7pm on the 23rd January. More details here - http://www.roughtrade.com/site/instore.lasso
