Blackchords have started work on their second album with former Frames guitarist David Odlum behind the desk.

Grammy and Mercury Prize nominee Odlum has produced The Frames, Gemma Hayes, Luka Bloom and Josh Ritter.

Blackchords are recording the album in a studio transformed from a country shed in regional Victoria.

Fans funded half the recording costs for the album after Blackchords put the call out via website Pozible. Money earned from local and international sync deals will cover remaining costs for the album.

When the album is done, the Blackchords tapes will head back to France with David to be mix at the Black Box Studios in Gravoyere.

Blackchords will showcase some of the new music at the Fuse Festival in Adelaide on February 13.

Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing has plans to open a hotel in the grounds of his home.

Downing ' a founding member of the band ' told the Shropshire Star that he is currently talking to investors and hopes to get started on the building this year.

'I'm 60 years old now so I really want to get things completed. That's always been the endgame,' he told the paper.

'When it comes to the vision I know exactly what I want to do but once we develop the hotel and leisure side of things I'll need to bring in professionals to run the operation because it's impossible to do it on your own.'

He also said that he is planning on being 'a flagship sports and leisure facility to seriously put Bridgenorth and the surrounding areas on the map, not just nationally but internationally.'

The hotel will have 63 rooms, an indoor swimming pool, a spa and a 'top class' restaurant.

Downing helped found Judas Priest in 1969. Their riffy metal was at the time unheard of and they quickly became one of the most influential bands in the world. Their hits include Breakin' The Law and Living After Midnight, both off their sixth album British Steel.

The band's most recent album was the 2008 concept album Nostradamus.

Downing left Judas Priest mid-tour on April 20, 2011.

Riot guitarist in critical condition

Mark Reale, guitarist for Riot, has been hospitalized in San Antonio, TX and is in critical condition suffering from Crohn's disease.

The official site posted the following on Friday:

Riot founder and guitarist Mark Reale has been admitted to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition due to complications of Crohn's disease. Subsequently, there is a possibility that he may not appear in the band's upcoming performances in the Northeast and aboard the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise to Grand Cayman.

Mark has been battling Crohn's for most of his life, working and performing while enduring almost constant pain and the side effects of treatment for his illness. He was in Texas bravely attempting to practice for the shows, but was felled by a severe onset of Crohn's symptoms leaving him in the Intensive Care Unit at an undisclosed facility.

The band has agreed that the performances will take place as scheduled with the possibility that Mark may not be well enough in time to appear. Riot would also like to acknowledge that Mark has been struggling with these symptoms throughout the production of their new album, Immortal Soul, and that guitarist Mike Flyntz recorded a major portion of the guitars on the album with Mark's creative direction while he was unable to perform.

For this reason, fans can be assured that the show will be as exciting as anything Riot has ever staged, even if Mike needs to hold down double guitar duty. Mark will be sorely missed in this event, but the shows will go on.

We ask fans and friends of the band to pray for Mark's speedy recovery, and to support the band in our efforts to bring you the Riot reunion shows that have been so long in the making. While Mark's family insists on privacy during this difficult time, your prayers and good wishes will make it to his bedside until he is able to return to the stage.

Many thanks and Shine On!
Mike, Tony, Bobby and Don

Riot originally formed in New York in 1975 by Reale, drummer Peter Bitelli, bassist Phil Feit and vocalist Guy Speranza. Their biggest album was 1981's Fire Down Below which reached 99 on the Billboard charts.

Reale is the only original member still performing with the band.

Tony Iommi, guitarist with Black Sabbath from 1969 to 2006 and once again from 2011 to today, has been diagnosed with early stage lymphoma.

The following was posted on both Black Sabbath and Iommi's official sites:

With the news that Black Sabbath´s Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma, his bandmates would like everyone to send positive vibes to the guitarist at this time. Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan--the 'IRON MAN' of Rock & Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.

This comes as Black Sabbath--Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums)--are writing and recording their first album in 33 years in Los Angeles (still set for release this fall) with producer Rick Rubin. They will now go to the UK to continue to work with Tony. Further information will be released as it becomes available.

The group is scheduled to start their world tour on May 18 in Moscow and to headline the Download Festival on June 8 to 10 in Donnington Park, England.
