Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder reunite on new track

This year sees 30 years since Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder first worked together on the classic smash hit 'Ebony and Ivory' (March 1982), which was Number 1 in the UK and the US.

The release of Paul's new album 'Kisses On The Bottom' sees them reunited on the track, 'Only Our Hearts'. 'Only Our Hearts' is one of two original McCartney compositions included on the album, which is a collection of standards Paul grew up listening to in his childhood.

On working with Stevie, Paul said, "Stevie came along to the studio in LA and he listened to the track for about ten minutes and he totally got it. He just went to the mic and within 20 minutes had nailed this dynamite solo. When you listen you just think, 'How do you come up with that?' But it's just because he is a genius, that's why".

Stevie joined Paul at LA's legendary Capitol Studio's to record the track.

'Kisses On The Bottom' is a collection of standards Paul grew up listening to in his childhood as well as the two new McCartney compositions 'My Valentine' and 'Only Our Hearts'. With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band, Paul's new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home

'Kisses On The Bottom' is out on Monday 6th February.

Paul McCartney: Im no icon

Paul-McCartney:-Im-no-icon Email this story Printable version

Sir Paul McCartney is uncomfortable but 'thankful' for his icon status.

The former Beatle has enjoyed a career in the music industry spanning over five decades and is as popular as ever.

But in an interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau, the 69-year-old revealed that he is just a simple man from England and doesn't see himself as others do.

'That feels strange. You know, deep inside I'm still the boy from Liverpool,' he said of being called an icon.

'But if people value me this way I can't just say, 'British icon? No thanks! I don't want to be an icon!' Even if that's true. I think about it this way: it's their way of telling me that I did good. So I have to accept it and be thankful.'

And 55 years after meeting his legendary partner John Lennon and starting his musical career, Paul still gets excited about being on stage.

'What should I say? It doesn't stop being fun for me!' he revealed. 'Last year in my tour in South America the people were absolutely fascinated - that was the best thing I ever saw! When I go on stage and am welcomed that happily it's really hard for me to just stop.'

Paul has no intention of giving up performing any time soon.

'I'll keep on going as long as people want to see me. I always end every concert with the sentence: 'See you next time,' and I mean it,' he confirmed.

Paul McCartney 'Kisses On the Bottom' album preview

Paul-McCartney-Kisses-On-the-Bottom-album-preview Email this story Printable version

As has been widely reported, Paul McCartney has recorded an album of mostly standard pop songs that he remembers from his childhood and which influenced him musically. Kisses on the Bottom will be out February 7 in the U.S. (February 6 in the rest of the world) through Hear Music in both a standard and deluxe edition.

The album was produced by Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and includes Krall's band along with guest appearances form Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder.

McCartney said of the song selection,"When I kind of got into songwriting, I realized how well structured these songs were and I think I took a lot of my lessons from them. I always thought artists like Fred Astaire were very cool. Writers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, all of those guys - I just thought the songs were magical. And then, as I got to be a songwriter I thought it's beautiful, the way they made those songs."

The recording process for the album also reminded McCartney of his days with the Beatles. "It was very spontaneous, kind of organic, which then reminded me of the way we'd work with The Beatles. We'd bring a song in, kick it around, when we found a way to do it we'd say 'Okay, let's do a take now' and by the time everyone kind of had an idea of what they were doing, we'd learnt the song. So that's what we did, we did the take live in the studio."

...and as for that title, it's actually a line from the opening song, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter.

Track List:

I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter (Fred Ahlert & Joe Young)
Home (When Shadows Fall) (Jeff Clarkson, Peter van Steeden, Harry Clarkson)
It's Only A Paper Moon (Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg, Billy Rose)
More I Cannot Wish You (Frank Loesser)
The Glory Of Love (Billy Hill)
We Three (My Echo, My Shadow And Me) (Sammy Mysels, Dick Robertson, Nelson Cogane)
Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive (Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer)
My Valentine (Paul McCartney)
Always (Irving Berlin)
My Very Good Friend The Milkman (Harold Spina, Johnny Burke)
Bye Bye Blackbird (Ray Henderson, Mort Dixon)
Get Yourself Another Fool (Haywood Henry, Tucker)
The Inch Worm (Frank Loesser)
Only Our Hearts (Paul McCartney)

The Deluxe Edition of the album adds the following two songs:

Baby's Request (Paul McCartney)
My One And Only Love (Guy Wood, Robert Mellin)

Artist: Paul McCartney
Title: Kisses on the Bottom
Release Date: February 7, 2011
Label: Hear Music
Format(s): CD, DD (Standard & Deluxe Editions)
